Early settlement in Rockford can be trace way back in 1834. The combined settlements of Midway in the east and west banks of Rock River led to the creation of Midway village which was renamed to Rockford in 1837. In the succeeding years, its first post office was created and its first weekly newspaper came to life. Rockford was then connected to Chicago through the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad after it was officially chartered into a city in 1852. During the Civil War, Rockford served as the training site for infantry regiments including the Illinois-based mobilized regiment Zouaves.
